Our History

The Church stands in a garden surrounded by HIGHBURY QUADRENT Prior to about 1350 this was known as “Newinton Barrow “but quite how this name originated has been lost in the mist of time. It is possible that the land was named after its owner, one “de Barowe”, or conversely, he may have acquired the name from the land its self.

Historically the name “Highbury” first appears in the document dated 1370 Highbury Quadrant itself was referred to in a lease in 1541 as “that field or close or meadow called Danbottom, alias Danebotteme, containing 12 acres”. Leading to that field from the north was Danbottom Lane which we know today as Blackstock road.

The first church to be built on the site a temporary iron structure, was in 1878. Having a congregation of 54 members there were two services on Sundays and one on Wednesday and payer meeting on Saturdays. The Church members swelled rapidly and only a year later had increased to 450 each Sunday. A telling indication of the needs and attitudes of the community at that time

The church saw itself as a mission Church and by 1877 had instigated Mothers Meetings, Bible Union and later, a Sunday School with staff of 22 teachers. With such a thriving congregation on 29 July 1880 foundation for a new building were laid down. By 1902 the records show that 1,647 men, women and children attended the church for worship.

For more than 70 years the church continued to be a beacon and haven for the local population. Even through the dark days of World War II when aerial bombardment was a constant threat and danger. By 1950, however, changes were needed again and the Church building was replaced by new structure although it was found possible to retain the previous halls and educational section.

Later times bring different ideas and requirements- if the Church is to continue as a vibrant entity it must adapt to the needs of its congregation. Sad as it may be the present buildings are no longer entirely suitable for today’s activities and the creation of a new Church must now be given serious consideration. So, we are now working to redevelop our Church.

One of the activities of Highbury Quadrant Congregational Church is the Second Chance Shop, which is operated on Christian ideals, The aim being to provide practical support to the local community by providing fairly priced clothing, house hold equipment, records, CDs and of course books.

The shop is justly proud of our second-hand book section having an excellent selection of reference books and many shelves of fiction all meticulously arranged by volunteers. You will also be able to find good nursery equipment, toys and games for the Children.

The quiet musical atmosphere provides the right environment to find that special book or record that has until now remained elusive. Our shop staff always provide a gentle Christian welcome and are willing to be helpful.
